Thai Cuisine

ahan thai is the national cuisine of Thailand.

Thai cooking places the primary focus on lightly prepared dishes with a strong aromatic component and a spicy edge.  Thai cooking is “about the juggling of disparate elements to create a harmonious dish,” says chef David Thompson.

Thai cuisine has influenced and been influenced by their neighbors’ culinary traditions and cuisines, including India, Cambodia, Malaysia, and Indonesia.

There are five regional Thai cuisines.  They are:

  • Bangkok
  • Central Thai
  • Isan
  • Northern Thai
  • Southern Thai

Traditional Thai cuisine falls into four categories: tom (boiled dishes), yam (spicy salads), tam (pounded foods(, and gaeng (curries). In addition, Deep-fries, stir-fries, and steamed dishes derive from Chinese cuisine.

CNN Travel conducted an online poll that involved more than 35,000 people from around the world to discover the “World’s 50 Best Foods.” The poll showed that Thailand had more dishes on the list than any other country.

The items listed were:

  • tom yam goong (4th)
  • pad thai (5th) Thai Kitchen’s best Seller – 1000s served monthly from four locations
  • som tam (6th)
